MOUNT MAUNGANUI ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER WINS FIRST PLACE AT NEW ZEALAND  NATIONAL DESIGN AWARDS

October 16, 2010 Mount Maunganui-based designer Will Tatton of Will Tatton Architecture has won gold at the ADNZ (Architectural Designers NZ) National Awards, held in Nelson last night.

Goldwinner_Oceanbeach_2In what is his first year of entry into the ADNZ awards, Will has won the Residential Multi Unit category award for the Mount Maunganui beachfront Bond Street apartments. He was also a finalist in the Residential New Single Dwelling over 250sqm category for the Fisher House in Tauranga.

Judges and renowned New Zealand Architects Ian Athfield and Pete Bossely praised Will's winning entry saying they were impressed with the strong architectural lines of the three unit Bond street townhouses that took full advantage of the ocean views, minimised exposure to the elements and offered a superb aspect to the public domain with a stylish street frontage.

Asked to design something bold and exciting, Will enlisted simple forms, refined modern aesthetics and a diverse range of naturally ageing and unique materials such as copper, Indian stone, Turkish marble floors and hardwood timber decking to give a timeless quality.

The ambitious project sought private and sheltered outdoor spaces that temper the coastal weather. To achieve this the generous floor layout is enhanced by oversized cavernous interior spaces and five meter high motorised louvers consisting of wind and rain layers which can be slid to create a semi sheltered outdoor rooms, which blend the exterior and interior and draw a lush tropical flow from the beach throughout the living spaces.

Overall the judges commented "The design takes full advantage of the ocean aspects of the site and its exposure to the elements, whilst presenting a positive energy to the street in the public domain."

Fisher_adnzAnother of his houses was a finalist on the night for the Residential New Single Dwelling over 250sqm category and was also praised for its sound structure and magnificent massing. The bold, tower-like four storey Fisher house in Mount Maunganui posed a challenging design for such a small site but compensated for its small footprint using lofty height to gain sweeping beach views. Features include a hollow vertical spine criss-crossed with stairs, inner bridges, a glass lift up the side of the atrium and an entry which looks up 12 meters to a glass roof.

Judges commented "The structure provides a strong reference point and through its complexity produces an exuberant and surprising massing."

The win comes as a great achievement to the team at Will Tatton Architecture. Will said it is a solid reflection of the quality of work they put into their projects.

"Multi unit apartments and residential houses are perhaps our biggest area of work alongside renovations and commercial spaces," says Will. "So this alongside the fact it's the first time we've entered the awards means its been a great success and has given us a good indication of where we stand in the field. ADNZ is a great organization and the standards of the competition were high. For me it has also been a privilege to receive recognition from some of New Zealand's leading architects."

Having built many seaside and country residential apartments and homes, as well as commercial buildings, Tatton puts it down to his upbringing on a farm in the king country and his later seaside living which has influenced his design; strongly revolved around immersing the landscape into architecture.

"I enjoy getting people closer to the landscapes they love through the way they live. New Zealanders love the land and architecture is uniquely able to make these connections in a fulfilling day to day way," says Will.

Will Tatton Architecture has been a member of ADNZ for 18 months.

About ADNZ Awards (from www.adnz.org.nz)

The ADNZ/Resene Design Awards were conceived to showcase the work of New Zealand's growing number of architectural designers. Architectural Designers New Zealand Inc (ADNZ) was formed in 1966 to promote and develop the professional skills and services offered by its members, who are all specialists in building design and constructions.

The National Design Awards acknowledge design excellence in residential and commercial / industrial projects, with a Supreme Winner award presented to the best overall design. In 2008, an extra award, the Sustainable Design award, was added to the existing 17 judging categories. It gives ADNZ members even further scope to demonstrate their design talents by showcasing projects with a strong emphasis on environmentally friendly design and sustainability.
