Bernadette is a residential hospital for the elderly close to Bayfair Shopping Mall and on a flat site in Mount Maunganui. Bernadette integrates well into the community rather than being separate and we have ensured access is easy and direct.
The feeling is as much as possible of a tropical hotel rather than institutional. Bernadette's scale is low and feels like a large country house. Plenty of light floods into the private rooms and spacious hallways. The hospital is small enough to give personal service, and always feels fresh and bright with a cheerful colour scheme.
While in Holland in 1983 I visited my wife's 90 year old grandparents in a similar scale hospital. The accessibility to family and visitors impressed me as it felt more like a cafe than a hospital. Johannes, at 90, still had a cognac and a cigar every day - this is really living! I have tried to provide the same sense of welcome with the entry visible from the street right through into the living room and courtyard.
